North Tyneside Council is continuing an initiative to improve the most heavily used footpaths.

Recently an additional £400,000 was invested in footpath works after improvements were made a priority by North Tyneside's Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE.

The focus has been on areas of high footfall such as as town centres and key routes to and from North Tyneside Living older people’s accommodation schemes.

Around 20 schemes have been completed so far for North Tyneside Council by its partner Capita.

The improvements are continuing and work is due to take place on the eastern side of Station Road in Wallsend, between High Street East and Hawthorn Grove.

Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We know that the condition of roads and pavements is a priority for residents.

“These footpath improvements have been making a positive difference to areas right across the borough and I’m pleased they are now continuing into Wallsend town centre.”

Subject to factors such as the weather, work will begin on Tuesday 29 May and take around 20 days to complete. Sunken paving will be lifted and re-laid while Tarmac patches will be replaced with concrete flagstones.

The footpath will remain open at all times, as will the pedestrian crossing opposite Wallsend Customer First Centre, however, it will be necessary to temporarily suspend around half the parking bays.
