Work to replace lampposts that were flattened when the Beast from the East struck at Whitley Bay is nearing completion.
Several lampposts along the seafront were blown over, or removed as a precaution, after ferocious weather struck North Tyneside at the end of February. Inside
North Tyneside Council and its partners, SSE and Capita, responded quickly to make the area safe after being alerted by local people.
The council has now replaced almost 100 lampposts along the seafront, from Spanish City to St. Mary’s Lighthouse, and work is nearing completion.
Councillor John Stirling, cabinet member for the environment, said: “This has been a very efficient and thorough piece of work to put right some of the damage caused by the powerful storms we endured at the end of February.
“Other councils experienced similar incidents across the North East when the storm arrived and it was a very challenging week for all concerned. Our staff and partners responded quickly after being alerted by local people and we weren’t prepared to take any chances with further columns being blown over.
“I would like to thank our staff and partners for their efforts as we put the finishing touches to this replacement scheme."
