Hundreds enjoy coast ukulele festival

A three day ukulele festival took place in North Tyneside for the first time (Friday 9 – Sunday 11 November).

The North Tyneside Ukulele Festival attracted over 200 ukulele players to the coast to enjoy live music, workshops and special performances.

The festival launched on Friday 9 November at Spanish City with three bands, a big strum along and an open mic session amongst the highlights.

A packed programme of entertainment on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November included performances at Cullercoats Crescent Club and Tynemouth Station Market, as well as workshops at Rockcliffe First School.

The festival closed on Sunday with a final performance at a special World War 1 Commemoration event outside of Spanish City in Whitley Bay.

Cllr Sarah Day, cabinet member for Culture, Sport and Leisure, said: “It was amazing to see so many people attending North Tyneside’s first ever ukulele festival.

“It was an absolutely fantastic weekend, with people coming from all over the region to enjoy it – so I am delighted that we as the council were able to support it.”

Sarah Timney, organiser of the festival, said: ‘The festival was a huge success with all tickets selling out ahead of the event.

‘It was wonderful to see so many people visiting from outside of the area and enjoying events at various venues along our lovely coastline.

‘Special thanks to all our local artists and performers including some very talented local schoolchildren.’

The festival was organised by Bay Uke with support from Brian Debnam Associates, Green Beans Market and North Tyneside Council.
