Karen Knox became a carer for North Tyneside Council’s Shared Lives scheme in 2007 and since then has found it an immensely fulfilling experience.
Under the scheme, approved carers provide a home to vulnerable adults to promote their independence and give them a sense of belonging.
Anne moved in with Karen and instantly became part of the family. With support from Karen, Anne has developed a great social life enjoying holidays, walks, gardening, country fairs, going to the cinema and helping Karen with her horse.
Anne’s health greatly improved once she moved in with Karen and she has become very fit and active.
Speaking on her life with Anne, Karen said: “Being a Shared Lives carer has allowed me to work, but also stay at home to look after the children when they were young.
“It has given our children an understanding of how people with a learning disability live and the challenges they face daily to live in the community, and it has made them better people for it.
“Our family have been brought into contact with some very genuine and nice family members, who are really appreciative of the Shared Lives scheme. The reaction of people when they ask what I do is always very positive, and they are impressed particularly by the fact that Anne lives in our home as part of the family. It’s nice when people tell you you’re doing something that’s really worthwhile.”
