More summer events are being affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
One of North Tyneside’s most popular community events, Wallsend Festival, has now been cancelled, but will return in 2021.
The annual event in the town centre and park usually features live music, stalls, classic cars and a fairground but organisers have taken the difficult decision to focus efforts on next year’s celebration.
North Tyneside’s Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE, said: “Decisions to cancel or reschedule events are always taken with public safety at the heart of it and the coronavirus pandemic means we just can’t take any chances when planning large public gatherings over the next few months.
“We will be working closely with event organisers to make sure we get back to a vibrant events programme with lots going on in the borough as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
Wallsend Festival joins a host of events around the UK that have been cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Locally they include Whitley Bay Carnival, Fake Festival, Cullercoats Harbour Day and the VE Day celebrations.
Also, the Great North Wheelchair Line Up, Whitley Bay Proper Food and Drink Festival, Shiremoor Treat and Spanish City Triathlon won’t be going ahead.
North Tyneside’s annual 10k Road Race and Tynemouth Food Festival have been rescheduled to the autumn, while the Mouth of the Tyne Festival has been rearranged for 2021.
