North Tyneside has a long-standing history of supporting people who are looking for safety and sanctuary.
The council stands with the people of Ukraine and is providing support and solidarity through a number of mechanisms, including.
- The Ukrainian Flag is being flown outside the Council’s Quadrant East and Killingworth offices, as well as other locations across the borough.
- The iconic St Mary’s Lighthouse is being illuminated in the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
Donations
The Council would like to thank any resident, community and business who has already made a generous financial donation or donated items to be sent to the people of Ukraine.
The most beneficial route for donating is a financial pledge to a well establish organisation such as –
These organisations will get the right support, to the right people, at the right time.
There are organisations across the region that are collecting donations of items to be sent to the Ukraine including Polish communities and churches. The needs of families fleeing the crisis is changing all the time, we would advise speaking directly to any organisation collecting items and confirming what the latest needs are before dropping off your items.
There are huge logistical challenges with getting items to the families that need them, a financial donation is the most beneficial and impactful way you can support the people of Ukraine.
Housing Ukrainian Refugees
In line with national plans in place from the Government North Tyneside Council will work alongside our colleagues and partners to ensure that the relevant support is in place for Ukrainian refuges to settle in North Tyneside if needed.

- Samaritans – Call free any time, from any phone on 116 123 - Whatever you are going through a Samaritan will face it with you. They are here 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Latest statement of support from Elected Mayor, Norma Redfearn CBE –
“The outcry of support for the people of Ukraine from our residents, our communities, our businesses and our elected members has been nothing short of amazing. People have stepped forward to make incredible donations to the families and people fleeing the conflict and those seeking safety away from the fighting, thanks to each and every one of you.
“The most helpful way we can all make donations is via the official routes, supported by organisations like the Red Cross and UNICEF. These well-established organisations are best placed to get the right support, to the right people, at the right time. I appreciate that financial donations may not be possible for everyone and there are mechanisms to make donations of items in the region, but I would ask that residents make sure they check who they are leaving their items with to ensure they reach the people of Ukraine and are the most beneficial.
“There are huge logistical challenges associated with getting donated items into the hands of the families that need them, a simple cash donation, no matter how big or small, to an established charity is far more beneficial.
“For anyone who has already donated items or money I would like to say thank you, your generosity and spirit is shining brightly once again. We are a Council and a borough with a proud tradition of supporting people who are looking for safety and sanctuary.
