Fireworks set to light up the skies

The annual North Tyneside Fireworks Display takes place this Sunday (November 6) on the Links, Whitley Bay.

Thousands of residents are expected mark the tradition and attend the free display, which includes fairground rides and refreshments.

The display will start at 7pm, lasting no more than 15 minutes, and will feature a larger number of quieter fireworks than ever before.

Councillor Carl Johnson, Deputy Mayor of North Tyneside and Cabinet Member for Culture, Tourism and Events, said: “Whilst thousands of residents and their families will come to watch the display, we know that fireworks can have a less positive impact on some people, so we try to make sure we do all we can to keep the event to a reasonable time, reduce the noise impact year on year and support the emergency services by offering a safe, professional alternative to people who might otherwise hold their own displays at home.”

Steven Thomas, Group Manager, Prevention and Education at Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: "We would always advise residents to enjoy the safety of an organised bonfire and fireworks display in your local area.

"This will provide you and your family with peace of mind that all of the essential safety checks have been made to enable the event to proceed. It also discourages more people from buying their own fireworks to use at home where there is a greater risk of causing personal injury or starting a fire.

"Stay safe this Bonfire night."

There will be a small funfair in the Brier Dene Car Park along with refreshments from around 5pm.

Other displays in North Tyneside this week include Blue Flames Sporting Club at Benton (entry fee applies) and Segedunum Roman Museum in Wallsend (free), both taking place on Saturday 5 November.

In the event of bad weather the display will take place the following day, conditions permitting.
