Recruitment open for North Tynesides outstanding Teacher Training programme

North Tyneside’s outstanding school-based initial teach training programme is looking for the next generation of primary school teachers.

Renowned for its success in supporting its trainees to have successful, thriving careers in teaching, the programme is open for applications for its next intake of students in September 2023.

The year long course is school-centred and offers training at the council’s professional development centre where trainees will learn from experienced and respected early years and primary professionals.

The ‘outstanding’ Ofsted rated course also has a fantastic relationship with local schools, and trainees are guaranteed placements in schools in North Tyneside where they’ll get practical, hands-on classroom experience.

Recent graduate Helen completed the course in 2022 and is now teaching her own class. Speaking of her experience she said: “I heard the North Tyneside SCITT had a good reputation and with it being close to home, it was the perfect choice for me. I felt well supported throughout the year and we were given good opportunities to see teaching practice relating to a wide range of subjects too.

“It has helped me massively with my first job, it allowed me to discover the teacher I wanted to be and find a school that matched my skill set. I feel very lucky to have trained with the SCITT.”

Councillor Hannah Johnson, Cabinet Member for Inclusion, Employment and Skills at North Tyneside Council, said: “As someone who trained through a SCITT course four years ago, I can personally vouch for how these courses are fantastic for anyone who has considered a move into teaching as it gives you the skills, experience, confidence, and qualifications to have a classroom of your own.

“The programme offers the highest quality training experiences to develop future teachers’ skills and support the brilliant education offer we have here in North Tyneside. I’d encourage anyone who has considered a career in teaching to have a look at what the course can offer them by contacting the team.”

Applicants for the course must have an honours degree at 2:2 or above and must have gained grade C/4 or above in English, mathematics, and science GCSE or equivalent qualification.
