North Tyneside Council continues to put civic pride at the heart of an investment plan which will help to raise environmental maintenance standards.
100 new multi-purpose (240 litre) litter bins will be placed in new locations across the borough before the summer, and a new vehicle added to the council fleet to ensure they can be emptied regularly.
Three new pedestrian sweepers have been purchased to allow council workers to mechanically sweep pavements and pedestrianised areas more efficiently.
Extra environmental maintenance teams will be recruited to help with strimming, tackling weeds, and clearing litter. Another team will be recruited to help keep the coast clean and tidy. They will work full-time and provide cover seven days a week, ensuring that bins are emptied, and litter picking is stepped up during busier periods.
The new teams will operate between May and September and provide a boost to the staff already working to keep the borough clean and tidy.
The council have already recruited 30 seasonal grass cutting staff who will be on the job from March to October.
Housing estate clean ups continue to take place across the borough. Since April 2022, the council has carried out 66 clean up days and removed 189 tonnes of rubbish from housing estates.
Councillor Sandra Graham, Cabinet Member for the Environment, said: “In the coming year the council will continue to improve environmental standards across the borough.
“We know from investment last year that adding more staff provides a real boost to our clean-up operations, and it is good news for our residents as we commit even more resources to keeping our neighbourhoods looking their best, which in turn creates a sense of pride and ownership within the borough.
“Our current approach has been a real success and we feel we can build on that by bringing in new equipment, increasing our litter bin provision, deploying more staff and working in a more co-ordinated fashion so we can respond to the issues that matter most to local people”.
