Celebrating armed forces in North Tyneside

A celebration event will be held to mark Armed Forces Day in North Tyneside as the authority shows its commitment to its serving personnel.

On Saturday 24 June, active servicemen and women, veterans, cadets, and residents are invited to Spanish City Plaza for a celebration of the Armed Forces.

Whitley Bay Sea Cadets, celebrating its 80th anniversary, will kick off the event at 10.45am as they march along the seafront from Grant’s Clock to the Spanish City Cenotaph, where there will be a minute’s silence and the raising of the Armed Forces Flag.

Following this, from 11.30am, the event welcomes local artist Dave Red to bring a party atmosphere. Dave will be doing two performances of 45 minutes each and has gained a reputation for the energy he brings to his performances.

To mark the occasion, the Spanish City will be offering 20% discount across all its venues for veterans and current serving personnel on the day. This includes Trenchers, Champagne Bar and Valerie’s Tea Room.

Andy Newman, North Tyneside Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “We’re very proud of our connections to our serving personnel in North Tyneside and we will always take every opportunity we can to pay our respects.

“This event is going to be a fantastic celebration of servicemen and women for their contributions and sacrifices they’ve made for our countries, so come along, enjoy the performances and join us as we celebrate these great men and women.”

North Tyneside Council provides a range of support on housing, welfare, and health services for veterans and serving personnel.

The Armed Forces Flag will be displayed outside of the council’s offices at Quadrant, on Cobalt Business Park, and its Killingworth Depot, throughout Armed Forces Week.

The council is offering a week’s free gym access from Monday 20 June until Sunday 26 June at any council-owned leisure centre. Those who apply will be asked to show their MOD 90 or Veteran’s Badge and they must live in North Tyneside.
