ASB Awareness Week: Support for Communities, Businesses, and Young People

Our community protection team and partners have been out across North Tyneside this week, speaking with residents, businesses, and young people to tackle antisocial behaviour and improve community safety.

ASB Awareness Week, under the theme #MakingCommunitiesSafer, focused on reducing anti-social behaviour, supporting victims, and strengthening neighbourhoods.

Here’s what our teams have been up to:

  • 171 residents spoken to, with concerns raised about motorbike and youth disorder, and shoplifting in town centres
  • 48 businesses supported, including new partnerships like Shop Watch at the Beacon Centre and Walking With
  • 22 young people (under 16) offered positive diversionary activities and advice on reporting crime
  • Significant reduction in ASB on Station Road after seven Fixed Penalty Notices were issued

Meanwhile, local businesses have spoken about the impact of the extra support available through Project Shield, an initiative making a real difference in reducing ASB and serious violence with extra patrols in hotspot areas.

Move It Dance Studio, based at the Memorial Hall in Wallsend, provides dance lessons for young people. Owner Helen Telford was considering leaving the area due to concerns about antisocial behaviour, but she says she has seen a 'massive improvement' since the rollout of Project Shield.

She said:"The visibility of police and the CCTV van is so reassuring. The timing of this support has been brilliant and has helped us so much."
