North Tyneside Council is running a series of roadshows to inspire young people and their communities to take action and protect the environment - as part of the National ‘Waste Week’ campaign.

National Waste Week, which is run by EDF Energy’s education programme The Pod, is taking place from 7 to 11 March.

A part of its waste awareness and recycling campaign, North Tyneside Council will be delivering interactive and fun filled assemblies, junk modelling workshops and unique playground pledge roadshows in four schools across the borough.

The roadshows will be visiting Collingwood Primary School, Holystone Primary School, South Wellfield First School and Amberley Primary School.

The assemblies, aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 children, will raise awareness of the importance of recycling and reducing waste, as well as focusing on the ‘Wash, Squash and Recycle’ and ‘Love Food Hate Waste’ campaigns.

There will be an incentive of a £300 prize every term to schools that make a pledge to Wash, Squash and Recycle.

Cllr John Stirling, North Tyneside Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “National waste week is a great campaign for young people to get involved with. It raises awareness of the importance of reducing waste in a fun and memorable way. It also links in with the campaigns we run throughout year to encourage young people to take care of the environment.

“This is just one of the many projects we are running with schools and communities across the borough. The environment is a key issue for us and getting young people involved from an early age is vital.”
