Retail centres

Introduction

North Tyneside has four main retail centres in the towns of Wallsend, North Shields, Whitley Bay and Killingworth - and a further seven district centres at Tynemouth, Battle Hill, Collingwood Centre, Forest Hall, Longbenton, Monkseaton and Whitley Lodge.

There are also two large retail parks at Silverlink and the Royal Quays.

Retail centres regeneration strategy and consultation

The Council has a Retail Centres Regeneration Strategy to:

  • improve the competitiveness of our retail centres, building on their key assets
  • identify key projects for Whitley Bay and North Shields town centres
  • support external and investment funding bids
  • help business, investors and developers understand our strategic intent
  • be the basis for planning policy, development control and land assembly

In December 2009 and January 2010, the Council consulted on options plans for North Shields and Whitley Bay town centres. In October 2010 Cabinet approved a full report and the executive summary on the Retail Centres Regeneration Strategy.
