Young people on the path to success

A group of young people will get a taste of working life as part of a new traineeship programme at North Tyneside’s leisure centres.

Four young jobseekers took up their posts in leisure centres at the end of May, as part of a traineeship programme run by North Tyneside Council.

Trainees will go to college one day a week and will spend the rest of their time based at one of the council’s outstanding leisure centres.

On site they will learn about key roles in leisure centres and the responsibilities they have. This includes shadowing the role of reception, leisure assistants, cleaners, contours instructors, management teams and swimming teachers.

Cllr Sarah Day, cabinet member with responsibility for Sport and Leisure, said: “It’s great to see that our leisure centres have been able to provide this fantastic opportunity for these young people.

“This programme offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a working environment and is an incredibly effective way to prepare these young people for work and life.

“I’d like to wish all the trainees taking part the very best for the future and look forward to seeing how they progress.”

Everyone who successfully completes the traineeship will be guaranteed an interview for the 18 month sport and leisure apprenticeship programme, which is due to start in September.

The programme will run until the end of June, coinciding with the start of recruitment for apprenticeship posts.
