Illegal waste carrier ordered to 300 hours unpaid work

An illegal waste carrier has been ordered to carry out 300 hours of unpaid work for a string of fly-tipping offences in North Tyneside.

Steven Roadment dumped waste, including shop signs, carpets, a mattress, window frames, fake grass, rubble and a wheelie bin, in various locations around the borough on nine separate occasions.

North Tyneside Magistrates’ Court heard how Roadment ran a company called Boss Removals, which he used to collect commercial and household waste in his van.

He was caught out after enquiries by officers from North Tyneside Council led them to the company.

Roadment was found to have dumped waste he had collected from a shop which had closed down, a garage door company, a window company, a woman with mental health issues, who he charged £100, and a 90-year-old man with dementia who paid £670.

Locations he was found to have dumped waste included charity recycling bins, a back lane, on the roadside and a back garden.

Roadment, 41, of The Nook, North Shields, admitted nine offences of depositing controlled waste and was sentenced to a Community Order to include 300 hours of unpaid work, 25 days rehabilitation requirement with the Probation Service, and he was ordered to pay £500 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.

Cllr Carl Johnson, North Tyneside Council’s cabinet member for Environment, said: “North Tyneside is a great place to live, work and visit and, like most people, we want to keep it that way – sadly though there are a minority who don’t.

“Cases like this show that we will take action against those who commit environmental crimes.

“We would also urge residents and businesses to make sure they know where their waste is going when they hire someone to take it away – only hand your waste over to licenced carriers.”

In June a new environmental ‘hit squad’ began working across the borough to blitz flytipping hotspots.

The new team supplement the current Environmental Enforcement Wardens who use the CCTV van to help capture incidents and are dedicated to targeting litter and rubbish and have had huge success so far, with 12 tonnes of rubbish collected in their first week alone.
