Council continues progress on council tax energy rebates

Over 70% of residents eligible for a £150 council tax rebate in North Tyneside have already received their payment, three months ahead of the deadline set by central Government.

On 3 February 2022 the Government announced a one-off payment of £150 for households in Council Tax bands A to D, to be paid directly into the bank accounts of those eligible before the end of September.

And now, following multiple waves of payments, almost all North Tyneside residents who pay their council tax via direct debit have received their £150 rebate, and arrangements are in place to support those who do not.

Anyone who hasn’t yet received their payment will receive a letter inviting them to claim the grant online. The option to make a claim and more information on the rebate can also be found at my.northtyneside.gov.uk/energyrebate.

Speaking on the success so far, Elected Mayor Norma Redfearn CBE said: “We know with energy costs rising, how important it was to ensure we got this money to the people who needed it.

“It’s an immense challenge to work through over 90,000 eligible homes, but I’m delighted at how quickly our teams have been able to get the payments out so far, and hopefully we are able to continue at this pace and get those that haven’t yet been paid the money they are entitled to as soon as possible.

“If you are eligible for the payment, but don’t pay by direct debit, you can now submit a claim. Our teams have done a great job so far and we are all committed to ensuring everyone gets the money they are entitled to.”

The authority has been provided with a grant to provide funding outside of the £150 payment, meaning it will be providing an extra discretionary payment to residents receiving council tax support.

Residents receiving council tax support in bands A-D will receive £20, topping up their payment to £170, while those in bands E-H will receive £170.

These payments will be made in the same way as the standard £150 council tax energy rebate and will be appearing in bank accounts in the coming months.
