North Tyneside Council’s Central Lower Promenade scheme in Whitley Bay picked up a national award on Friday.
The project, which was carried out in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council and was part of the Whitley Bay Seafront Master Plan, won in the Innovation category at the national Constructing Excellence awards. It was a joint entry with the Hartlepool Headland Coastal Defences scheme.
It beat stiff competition from the likes of the University of the West of England's Digital Campus and the Runswick Bay Coastal Defence Scheme.
Phil Scott, Head of Environment, Housing and Leisure, North Tyneside Council, said: “It is fantastic that our Central Lower Promenade scheme, in partnership with Hartlepool Council, has been recognised with a highly-prestigious national award – it is especially pleasing when you consider the level of competition we were up against.
“This is yet another endorsement for our work to breathe new life into the coast at Whitley Bay.”
It comes after a string of awards for the Spanish City restoration and is the second award for the Central Lower Promenade scheme.
