On 19 December 2024 North Tyneside Council’s Cabinet approved the proposed closure of Monkseaton High School. The school will close on 31 August 2026.
An extraordinary admissions process is now live for:
- pupils currently in Year 8 who attend a North Tyneside middle school (criteria apply); and,
- pupils currently in Year 9 at Monkseaton High School.
If you have a child who falls into one of these two categories, here is what you now need to do.
Year 8 pupils in a North Tyneside Middle School
Pupils in Year 8 cannot attend Monkseaton High School when they move into Year 9 in September 2025.
Who can apply for a school in the extraordinary admissions round?
Not everyone is eligible for this extraordinary admissions round. The process is now open until 17 January for:
- Parents and carers of children who have already applied for a Year 9 place at Monkseaton High School as one of their preferences in the normal admissions process; or,
- Parents and carers who have not applied for a Year 9 place for September 2025; or,
- Parents and carers who would like to apply for other schools where only one preference was submitted on their original application in the normal process.
If you meet this criteria, you can complete the extraordinary admissions application form to tell us which school you would like your child to attend in September 2025. The timetable below includes information on key dates.
You can find the extraordinary admissions application form below to complete. To do this you can either:
- complete this application form and email it to school.admissions@northtyneside.gov.uk; or,
- print and scan it, and email it to the address above, or return it to the Council at: Access Team, 3rd Floor left, Quadrant East, Silverlink North, Cobalt Business Park, North Tyneside, NE27 0BY school.
If you are unable to print this, paper application forms will be available to collect from 2 January at North Tyneside Council’s Quadrant reception and the Whitley Bay Community Hub and Library, and from 3 January at Monkseaton Library and Cullercoats Library. Each middle school will also have printed copies available from Monday 6 January.
If you are a parent or carer and your circumstances are not described above, you do not need to do anything else; your application will be progressed in line with our usual admissions arrangements.
What will happen next?
The Council will notify you of your child’s school place on National Offer Day (3 March 2025) like every other child.
What if my child is undergoing an Education Health and Care Needs Assessment (EHCNA) or has an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP)?
If the Council is undertaking an EHCNA or maintains your child’s EHCP, you will find timetables below[MM3] which provide you with more information about the admissions arrangements.
If the Council is undertaking an EHCNA you will still need to complete the extraordinary admissions application form below.
If your child already has a North Tyneside EHCP, you do not need to do anything; their new EHCP will be issued on 15 February 2025, naming your child’s school place for September 2025.
If your child has an EHCP maintained by another Council, you will need to talk to them about where you would like your child to attend in September 2025.
We want to assure you that the Council has not deviated from the SEND Code of Practice (2015).
